BOTHAN GLAS

Overview

Bothan Glas is located in the stunning surroundings of Glenfinnan on the West of Scotland with panoramic views which encompass Ben Nevis. The site is shielded from the adjacent road by a rocky knoll and the design had to overcome a planning restriction which stipulated the ridge height of the dwelling could not be any greater in height than the knoll.

This informed the resultant form of the building which is single storey and has two low monopitch roofs, with the volumes below each respective roof plane clad in contrasting natural timber and natural stone. As a result of the accommodation being on a single storey and the limited area of level ground, there was a challenge to allow natural light to penetrate the heart of the floorplan, where the kitchen is located, and this too was overcome by the configuration of the two monopitch roofs as they provided the ideal opportunity to create a large area of high-level glazing.
